Jayawardene quits as coach of five-time IPL winners Mumbai
Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as head coach of Mumbai Indians on Saturday to end a nearly decade-long association with one of the Indian Premier League's most successful teams.
The 49-year-old former Sri Lanka captain led Mumbai to three titles in his first stint between 2017 and 2022.
He rejoined the team in 2024 but was unable to replicate his success as five-time IPL winners Mumbai finished fourth in 2025 and ninth out of 10 teams in 2026.
"Together we have shared some unforgettable moments, overcome challenges and built something we can all be proud of," Jayawardene said in a statement.
"I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI.
"I wish the team every success in the years ahead."
Jayawardene represented Sri Lanka in 149 Tests, 448 one-day internationals and 55 T20 matches between 1997 and 2015.
